The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between Washington and European institutions.
