Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Australian cricket captain

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will be a central figure in this winter's historic rivalry.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about the prospects of being involved.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and multiple considerations around that, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after medical tests showed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with recurrences in multiple past seasons forcing him out of several home seasons in a short span.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to secure his spot for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his comeback but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

Should Cummins not be fit, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

All-rounder Cameron Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
